Tryout FAQ

RHLL TRYOUTS FAQ

Where are Tryouts?

Tryouts will be held at our lower fields at Dapplegray Elementary School. Click here for directions. And click here for a map.

Who tries out?

Every player signed up for the competitive divisions (Major, Intermediate, Minor) will need to try out for the season.

Why do we try out?

Tryouts give managers an opportunity to view players prior to their respective division drafts. This provides the best way to create parity and fair play throughout the league.

What do we do to try out?

Coaches ONLY will be allowed in the outfield to watch and evaluate players.

Each player will be evaluated in the following areas: Fielding, Catching, Throwing, Hitting, & Running.

Players will be separated into small groups and then evaluated on the following:

  • Catching a flyball to CF (3 balls)
  • Throwing from CF to third base (3 balls)
  • Fielding a ground ball at shortstop (3 balls)
  • Throwing from shortstop to first base (3 balls)
  • Hitting a pitched ball (5 balls)
  • Running to second base (on last ball pitched)

Is there a chance I don’t ‘make’ it?

Every player signed up WILL PLAY. Every player in their age appropriate division WILL PLAY in that division.

*Please keep in mind that players that are eligible (but not required) to play in a particular division may not end up playing in that division due to not being drafted.

What are the typical age ranges?

Visit Which Division on our website to learn more about each division.

Here is a very general primer on the various age ranges and divisions. Again, this is NOT a guarantee and will be based on each division draft.

When do we try out?

See the schedule below. Please keep in mind these important notes:

  • Make sure to check in and warm up at least 30 minutes prior to the start time of your tryout.
  • At check-in, please provide the player’s name, birthdate, and division. Players will be given a number and sticker they should attach to their shirts.
  • All players should be near the dugout area and listening for their names and numbers. Players will be given plenty of notice but please be ready! The day will move much smoother this way.

How long will it take?

Depending on the number of players, a player’s time on the field may only take 30 minutes.

What should I bring?

Please be ‘baseball-ready’. This includes bringing a glove and helmet. It is also helpful to  bring cleats, a bat, and cap.

What if I’m still unsure whether or not to tryout?

All 8 year olds (YO) will play Minors unless they request to play Rookie. Any 8 YO player interested or unsure of playing Minors should still tryout. Any 7 YO wanting to play Minors should tryout. However, as stated above, there is no guarantee.

How are teams formed?

Managers and coaches will hold a 'draft' in each division (Major, Intermediate, and Minor). Every player is placed into the pool and then are selected. Due to this reason, team requests (with the exception of siblings) are not guaranteed.

What if I signed up for Rookie, decided to try out, and made a Minor team?

If you had signed up for Rookie and ended up making a Minor team, you will have to pay the difference between the Developmental and Competitive divisions before playing this season. The opposite is applied to those who signed up for Minors (Competitive) and ended up playing Developmental, in which case you would receive a refund.

Will there be any makeup dates?

Sorry, there are no makeup dates.
