Which Division is Best for my Child?

An RHLL Division Primer

Finding the right division to place your child is often confusing.

Here is a general primer on the appropriate division for your child. Of course, general abilities and maturity will be among the final determinants.

TBall (5s and under): Developmental and introductory division. No game scores or records are kept. Games are generally on Saturdays only. Practices are up to Coach discretion. Players are required to have general baseball equipment. Special Tees are used. Team formation: Every consideration is given toward player requests and to match players with schoolmates and friends. Please keep in mind this is not a guarantee.

Rookie (5s, 6s, 7s): Developmental and introductory division. No game scores or records are kept. Games are generally on Saturdays only. Practices are usually once a week. Players are required to have general baseball equipment. Special pitching machines are used. Team formation: Every consideration is given toward player requests and to match players with schoolmates and friends. Please keep in mind this is not a guarantee.

Minor (some 7s, most 8s, 9s, some 10s): Competitive division. Scores and records are kept. Playoff games will be held at the end of the season. Two games per week (Saturday and weekday afternoon). Two practices per week (field and batting practice). Players are required to have baseball equipment. Combination of player and coach pitch. Team formation: Players are required to try out in early January. Players are then selected by coaches during a draft. Therefore, it is not likely that team/player requests can be honored.

Intermediate (some 9s, 10s, 11s): Highly competitive division. Scores and records are kept. Interleague games are played against other leagues in Palos Verdes (PVLL, LBLL, and SSLL). Playoff games will be held at the end of the season. Postseason winners eligible for King of the Hill and Tournament of Champions tournaments. Two games per week (Saturday and weekday afternoon). Two practices per week (field and batting practice). Players are required to have baseball equipment. Player pitch only. Team formation: Players are required to try out in early January. Players are then selected by coaches during a draft. Therefore, it is not likely that team/player requests can be honored.

Major (some 11s, all 12s): Highly competitive division. Scores and records are kept. Interleague games are played against other leagues in Palos Verdes (PVLL, LBLL, and SSLL). Playoff games will be held at the end of the season. Postseason winners eligible for King of the Hill and Tournament of Champions tournaments. Two games per week (Saturday and weekday afternoon).   • 10s         Intermediate/Minor
  • 9s            Intermediate/Minor
  • 8s            Minor
